As more and more people hit the road for their annual summer vacation, they should pack more than just an extra bathing suit. You should also be packing some of the best mobile apps for their journey.
How many times have you been driving down the interstate, wondering when your favorite fast food restaurant will come into view? Now, there are mobile apps available to help you find a bathroom, a good restaurant and even real-time traffic reports.
Remember, these apps should not be used while in the process of driving. Your co-pilot can help you utilize these apps.
- Waze Saves Time & Limits Frustration
As we all know, getting stuck in traffic can put a damper on any vacation. Although, there are mobile traffic apps with ways to see traffic, the Waze takes it one step further. It provides you with social data, enabling you to report what you are seeing and communicate with those around you. You will be able to view what others have reported about the traffic or upcoming regulatory signs.
Waze also has a built-in navigation system offering voice commands to move you around the traffic. This app has become extremely popular. In fact, carmakers are trying to figure out how to build it into their in-dash navigation systems. Waze is free for iPhone, Android and Blackberry.
- GasBuddy to Save Money
This app will help you save money because once it knows where you are, it will locate the gas stations closest to you. Then, it will sort them, according to price. GasBuddy even breaks down the grade prices for you.
GasBuddy also shows you details about each of the stations, such as whether the station has a restroom or offers customers an ATM. This app is free for the iPhone, Android, Windows phone and BlackBerry.
- Charmin’s Sit or Squat
So, GasBuddy tells you where the restroom is located, however, it is unable to tell you if that bathroom is clean. Therefore, you also need an app to tell you where you can find a not-so-nasty restroom on your trip. Although there are numerous options, Charmin’s Sit or Squat is a favorite.
With the Charmin app, green rolls of toilet paper are the best places to sit, while the red require you squat. The free Charmin app is available for the iPhone and Android.
- iExit Interstate Exit Guide
This app is an amazingly helpful tool. It gives you specific details related to upcoming exits. In fact, you have the option of setting an alert to inform you when a specific franchise chain is coming up! So, anyone who is craving their favorite fast food or trying to use their gas card to accumulate points, this app is for you. Unfortunately, so far, iExit is only available for the iPhone and it costs $.99.
- The Trapster
While no one condones speeding, we all know, it happens. For those of you out there, with the occasional lead foot, this app is definitely for you. The Trapster will alert you to the locations that have enforcement cameras and the known speed traps. Those who are law abiding citizens and never speed will also find this app useful because it alerts you to road hazards as well.
Just like Waze, the Trapster uses social information. This means, that others report where the police and speed traps are located and you can see these areas on the map. This app also alerts you when the speed limits change, providing voice alerts. The Trapster is free for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry.
